Heritage freshman Sony Michel making national headlines…and why not? March 4th, 2009
Here in Broward County, high school sports fans have long had the opportunity to watch some young, talented stars.
It wasn’t long ago that Florida’s Kenny Boynton was impressing basketball fans as a freshman in high school. That same year, Kentucky’s Brandon Knight was making national headlines at Pine Crest…as one of the most celebrated eighth-graders in the nation.
Before starring on the Stanford volleyball team, Foluke Akinradewo set herself apart as an incredible talent during her freshman year at St. Thomas Aquinas.
Those are just a handful of the young talents we’ve seen here recently and now it’s time to keep an eye on another fresh face: American Heritage freshman Sony Michel.
Michel burst onto the Broward high school football scene last year when as an eighth-grader he was voted the Class 3A-2A-2B-1A-1B Player of the Year. He was invited to the Youth All-American Bowl and this week, he was named the U.S. Army All-American Bowl Player of the Week after his performance in Heritage’s 49-29 win over Chaminade-Madonna.
In the victory, Michel rushed for 332 yards and five touchdowns on just 16 carries. Those are mind boggling numbers and they’re going to get national recognition–but they likely won’t surprise Broward fans who watched Michel last year.
To earn Player of the Week honors, Michel beat out millions of upperclassmen, including two specific seniors that were nominees after their teams’ victories last week.
Not bad for a freshman, is it?
