VIDEO: Wins for Douglas, St. Thomas Aquinas sets up huge girls soccer showdown January 25th, 2012
When it comes to girls soccer, there’s no doubt Douglas and St. Thomas Aquinas are two of the state’s powerhouse programs.
Last season, St. Thomas won its 11th state championship–a Florida record. But Douglas isn’t far behind. The Eagles have won five titles, good enough for third among all of the state’s programs.
In 2004 and 2005, both the Raiders and Eagles claimed state titles while playing in different classifications.
That won’t happen this year.
Reclassification has put the two powerhouse programs in Class 5A this season and both teams won their regional quarterfinals on Tuesday. That means they’ll meet Friday in a regional semifinal and one will see its season come to an end.
Here, St. Thomas Aquinas junior Jessica Hoyt talks about the Raiders upcoming matchup with the Eagles.
