Math Majors

Math Majors

Your gift with numbers may have led you to declare a mathematics major. But now you may be worrying over what you can actually do with that mathematics major after you graduate from college!

My College Guide has the surprising answers and, yes, you have many more options than simply teaching a room full of kids.

What You Can Do with a Mathematics Major

The short answer? Plenty! For many of you, the career options for a mathematics major may be eye-opening–because it certainly is diverse!

Mathematics majors have more than a knack for numbers, they excel as problem solvers and as researchers. With an attention to detail, math majors will find that they fit into plenty of career options.

Those that hold a mathematics related degree can count on putting their logic skills to the test!

Careers for Mathematics Degree Holders

When you earn your degree, you can choose from career paths like finance or actuarial science (assessing risk in finance or insurance type industries).

You may choose accounting or teaching, of course, but you may also enjoy careers in engineering, law enforcement, or the government! Yes, even law enforcement can utilize the special skills of a math major like unearthing patterns and solving problems.

Manufacturing, communications, and the sciences can also use math majors just like you.

One Major, Many Options

Take college classes that can help you explore the various branches related to your math major. It might be helpful (and interesting!) to minor in a related field like computer sciences, business, or marketing.

If you have yet to even enter college, consider looking around for math camps and summer programs to enhance your current math skills–and to meet with other like-minded math loving peers!

Gap Year Travel

Gap Year Travel

In some countries, the gap year, or bridge year as it is sometimes called, is part of a normal pattern of events for students just out of high school. Here in the United States, however, it’s not quite as common, but it certainly has merit!

If you aren’t quite ready for college, you want to see more of the world before buckling down for another few years of school, or you just want to get a better feel for your intended career choice, a gap year could be right for you. And once you’ve decided to take a gap year, you might be wondering how to tell your parents.

How To Tell Your Parents You are Taking a Gap Year

It might not be as difficult as you think. If your parents have been very involved in your college search, they have probably already read about a gap year. Your goal is to make sure they understand the reasons you’re considering it, that you aren’t going to waste a year of your life, and that you are hoping to grow as a person before tackling your college career.

Stay on the College Path – Don’t ditch your SAT test or ACT test. Remember to prepare as if you are going to college. In fact, you should still apply! If you get in to your dream school, that’s great! Just ask for a deferment. If not, know that some schools (including Ivy League schools like Harvard and Princeton) actually encourage students to take a gap year before digging in!

Prepare a Budget — Let your parents know that you are serious by presenting them with a budget that outlines your monthly expenses. Account for expenses both obvious and hidden, and don’t forget to add in entertainment. Think about the cost of gas as well as maintenance, housing, and expenses to consider if you are going to be part of a gap year group or if you are branching out on your own. Whatever your gap year plan is, be sure to put it down in dollars and cents to give your parents a better understanding of what you are expecting from them and how you plan to help.

Have a Back-Up Plan — If you don’t get into college (or your first or second choice college) this time around, know that a gap year can help you get in. How you spend your gap year can help college admissions get a better feel for the person you are becoming. Some gap year programs include options for extensive travel opportunities or community service projects. That kind of year off can really make you stand out to college admissions and may even help you get in to a school that originally turned you down!

Consider an Internship —  If you aren’t sure what you want to do after high school, maybe it would help you to test the waters with an internship. Not only can you gain valuable skills and determine whether or not the major you’re considering will be a good fit, but you will also stand out to college admission officers who are looking for future movers and shakers.

Stick to the Plan

Don’t get angry. Don’t become confrontational. Take to heart whatever they have to say. The bottom line is that you will most likely need your parents’ help to make the most of your gap year! Making them a part of the process and listening to their advice can go a long way in helping achieve your gap year goals!

Grades: Too Little Too Late?

Grades: Too Little Too Late?

Did you decide to attend college a little late in the game and now you’re concerned that your grades aren’t “good enough“?

Never fear, My College Guide is here! We’ve got tips to help you get into college!

When Your Grades aren’t Great

First of all, relax. You aren’t the first high school student to change your mind about attending college and then feel totally unprepared. You’ve still got choices!

Forget Ivy League — That’s the cold, hard truth. If you have your heart set on attending an Ivy League school but you haven’t been putting in the time and effort, and you don’t have the stellar grades or extracurricular involvement those top tier schools are looking for, it’s time to move on.

Focus on Flexible Schools — Every college is different and that’s a good thing! Not only does one campus differ greatly from the next but so too do their admission guidelines. What got you a rejection letter from one school, may get you an acceptance letter from another. Grades are a big factor, but it also helps if you have been involved in extracurricular activities or community service projects, too.

Community College – Not only can you knock out those basic courses but you can also spend a whole lot less! A community college can help you get into a four year college or university as long as you do well. Getting involved in your school won’t hurt, either! These kinds of schools are typically easier to get into and can offer you an idea of what to expect in a traditional four year college!

Take a Gap Year — You know what else doesn’t hurt? Trying to grow as a person! If you really want to attend college but aren’t quite ready to tack on an extra four years, a gap year may be a good option for you! You can team up with groups that focus on travel or community, which will make college admissions stand up and take notice!

Keep Calm and Carry On

Remember, schools are looking for well-rounded students. Just because you don’t have a 4.0 doesn’t mean that you don’t have a lot of other great things to offer!

You can’t turn those C’s or D’s into  A++’s, but you can make sure that you are presenting yourself in the best way possible. Go after a strong personal recommendation and spend time on your personal statement.

Don't Waste Your Summer

Don't Waste Your Summer

Your parents have been pushing college since you were a kid. You’ve always thought you would go, but now that you are finishing up your Junior year, you just aren’t sure you will be ready for college in a year.

What do you do? You’re not alone! Check out our tips to feel confident about going away to college!

What to Do When You Aren’t Ready for College

After years of watching your grades and staying on top of extracurricular activities, maybe you feel like four more years is four too many! Before you write off college altogether, we want to share with you a few ways to help you make the best decision.

First of all, college is not like high school. You have so much more freedom!

You get to choose from so many amazing college classes. You decide when and what you will eat, which activities you will participate in, and college professors don’t (usually) treat you like a kid.

How to Prepare for College

Use your summer wisely! Don’t just sit there and do the same old thing you do on the weekends. Instead, consider a summer camp.

Camp isn’t just for kids! It’s for college-minded teens just like you. They have camps available for all sorts of things and it may help you feel a bit more excited about taking that next step.

Or try a precollege summer program! It can give you a taste of college before you graduate from high school. You may sleep in an actual dorm, eat in the college cafeteria, and take some sample courses. Some even count for college credit! At the very least, you may gain confidence in your ability to survive without your mom and dad.

College Prep

If you still aren’t jazzed about four more years of school,  maybe you need a gap year. A gap year is more than just taking a year off and lazing around. It’s a way to grow as a person!

There are all sorts of organizations with amazing gap year programs. You may do a lot of travel or community service or a bit of both!

Either way, a gap year can help you discover hidden talents and skills you never knew you possessed.

Go, Explore

Don’t write off college just yet. You’ve worked so hard! Summer pre-college programs or gap years or summer camp — there are a lot of options out there.

Look around and see what will fit who you are and who you want to be!

Celebrity Street Style of the Week: Alessandra Ambrosio, Audrina Patridge, & Nina Dobrev

Every week, I scour the web to find inspiring outfits on your favorite celebs and help you recreate their looks! This week, I was inspired by Alessandra Ambrosio, Audrina Patridge, and Nina Dobrev. Read on to see how you can get their looks for yourself.

Look 1: Alessandra Ambrosio’s Summer Fun Look

Supermodel Alessandra Ambrosio always gives off that laid-back, beach girl vibe, and now that the weather is warming up, she gets to show off her awesome boho-inspired style.

This week, she wore beachy striped shorts with a wide brown belt, a chambray shirt, a low slung bag, flat sandals, and cool sunglasses. I love the combo of her denim shirt and her printed shorts; together, they create a look that’s both relaxed and put-together.

These striped shorts are great for warm seasons and would make any outfit more vibrant — the print and colors are so fun and summery. Pair them with a denim or chambray shirt and summer-appropriate accessories like eclectic bracelets, a buckled crossbody bag, cool sunglasses, and flat sandals. This outfit is perfect for a casual day out and about.

Look 2: Audrina Patridge’s Sleek Snake Look

Photo: Pacific Coast News

Audrina Patridge was spotted out on the town in some super cool snake-print skinny jeans, a black asymmetrical top, long necklace, black heels and a black quilted handbag.

Audrina’s printed jeans make quite a statement, as does her top, thanks to its unique cut. Printed jeans are still a huge trend — expect them to stay around for awhile! That said, floral prints generally dominate this trend, so a snake print is a sleek alternative that’s especially perfect for a night out.

These gray snake print skinny jeans make a cool statement and are perfect for a night out on the town when paired with sleek black accessories. Chic black pumps and a quilted bag round off the jeans, and a long pendant necklace adds some shine to a black asymmetrical top. This top is definitely a standout piece due to its on-trend hemline.

Look 3: Nina Dobrev’s Beach Ready Look

Nina Dobrev wearing an open knit sweater, seafoam green shorts and a fedora
Photo: Pacific Coast News

Nina Dobrev soaked up the sunshine in Miami with friends this week, but didn’t lose her sense of style even when on the beach. She looked casual and summery in some seafoam green denim shorts, an open-knit sweater (ideal for a warm, yet breezy day), a light-colored straw fedora hat, and flat sandals.

While Nina wore this outfit as a bathing suit cover-up, her look would be equally awesome for non-beach days.

Seafoam green denim shorts add a fun pop of color to any outfit, and are so perfect for spring and summer. A cream-colored sweater with open-knit weaving looks laid-back and cute when paired with the shorts and a matching straw fedora hat.

Flat sandals – these have a pretty floral cutout design and metallic color – keep things casual. Lastly, accessorize with a long pendant necklace that features an adorable elephant and beading to tie together all the colors found throughout the outfit.

What do you think?

My College Guide

What I really love about fashion is the subtle details of an outfit that often goes unnoticed at first glance. In Ana‘s case, I was immediately struck by the sophistication of her flowy H&M blouse and high-waisted Tory Burch pants. Though it wasn’t until I reviewed my photographs that I really understood how connected and purposeful every accessory really was to her ensemble.

The next time you see someone walk by wearing an interesting outfit, be sure and take a closer look! Ana’s style perfectly demonstrates how the little unexpected details can really make a look special.

Ana 101

Campus street style at the univeristy of nevada las vegas

Name: Ana

School: UNLV

Year: Freshman

Major: English

Let’s Talk Fashion

How would you describe your sense of style? “I’m not sure, I try to be as un-casual as possible. I try to stand out!”

Tell me about this outfit in particular. What made you choose it and bring these pieces together? “I’m really into black and white and I’ve had this shirt for a while. Today I actually tried to be more casual, and I usually don’t really wear heels but these are Jimmy Choo and they were on sale so I could not pass them up.”

Do you have any fashion advice for other students? “Don’t do anything that you’re not comfortable with. Don’t care about what other people think, just dress in whatever you want to.”

What are your favorite trends right now? “Right now… really bright colors for spring. I know that pastel colors are really spring-ish, but really bright colors call my attention.”

Do you have a favorite fashion designer, and if so, who? “Probably Balenciaga. I think that it’s very modern. Other designers try to be more conservative, but Balenciaga is more out there.”

What do you do for fun? Do you have any hobbies or interests that have contributed to your fashion philosophy? “I’m definitely online a lot, so I check out a lot of fashion stuff. I usually check Tumblr for inspiration. I love when blogs post pictures from right off the runway.”

If you could raid anyone’s closet, who would it be? Blair Waldorf”s! It’s very preppy. I don’t feel like I’m like that, but I would like at some point in my life to try it out. If anything I’d like to try to mix our styles up and find a balance to make it classy, yet modern.”

Elements of Ana’s Outfit

1. Studded Collar

studded collar blouse UNLV campus style

Ana’s flowy H&M blouse is soft and feminine with a surprise: a silver-studded Peter Pan collar! The studs add a contrasting texture to the shirt and contribute brightness and visual interest. The sparkling silver studs eliminate the need for a necklace or earrings because they capture the light and draw attention on their own.

2. Mixed Metal Jewelry

UNLV campus style- mixed metal jewelry

By mixing metals in her watch, bracelet and ring, Ana is able to tie in the gold detailing of her shoes and purse chain with the silver studs of her shirt. She shared that most of her jewelry is either given to her as a gift or is a family heirloom from her grandmother.

3. Elegant Sandals

Jimmy Choo sandals as seen at UNLV

Ana couldn’t pass up these Jimmy Choo sandals when she spotted them on sale at Saks. (We are totally jealous!) The interlaced black and gold straps give the shoes an elegant, art-deco appearance.

4. Chanel Purse

Chanel purse campus style at UNLV

Like her sandals, Ana’s Chanel purse combines black and gold detailing in the straps. The gold chain is threaded with a black ribbon, giving the straps contrast using colors and textures. The quilted pattern of the black leather also adds textural interest. It’s obviously rare to see Chanel on a college campus, so we’re totally obsessed with (and jealous of!) Ana’s drool-worthy tote.

What do you think?

Do you like Ana’s outfit? What do you think of the black and white contrast she’s playing with? Do you love her Peter Pan collar as much as we do? Let us know in the comments below!
