It’s May! And with spring finally here, magazine editorials are starting to display some refreshingly bright ensembles to reflect a new season. As these glossies demonstrate, it’s time to say goodbye to layers and layers of knits, and welcome the warm, sunny rays with spring and summer-appropriate ensembles.

Not sure what to wear for the weather’s change of heart? Well, all you need to do is scroll on down: I’ve compiled some of my favorite of-the-moment fashion editorials and paired them with some inspired outfits. Interested? Read on, sunshine!

1. Tati Cotliar by Richard Burbridge for T Magazine

Tati Cotliar by Richard Burbridge for T Magazine
(To see the rest of this editorial, check out the source, FashionGoneRogue.)

While the outfit is not exactly real-life wearable, I couldn’t help but admire the beautiful colors and prints in this explosive editorial. Definitely taking the whole “florals for spring” thing literally, T Magazine managed to flawlessly fuse fashion and art together. I love the interesting prints as well as the cool, sculptural aspect of this photo.

Outfit inspired by Tati Cotliar by Richard Burbridge for T Magazine
(Ring, Dress, Rose Rings, Flats, Turban)

To create an outfit inspired by the editorial, I tried to find garments that stayed true to the colors in the photo. To start, I chose a ’60s-esque lace-embellished dress and paired it with an adorable set of lilac ballet flats, also with floral lace detail. To add that extra kick of color, I picked three fun rings – one vintage style cameo ring with a kick of green, as well as a pair of lovely rose rings. Lastly, to finish off the look, I picked out an optional knit headband – it adds a fun kick of teal to the look, without being too loud.

2. ’Delightful, Stripe & Dot’ Choi Joon Young by Zo Sun Hi for Singles Korea

'Delightful, Stripe & Dot' Choi Joon Young by Zo Sun Hi for Singles Korea
(To see the rest of this editorial, check out the source, FashionCopious.)

If you’re a fan of edgy minimalism, you’ll love this editorial from Singles Korea. It’s an absolute love letter to stripes, and as a fan of patterns myself, I can’t help but go gaga for it. Love the heels, the pops of color, and the complex simplicity of it all.

(Earrings, Flats, Shirt, Shorts, Hat)

To help you get a similar look, I went hunting for everything stripey. First on the list? A pair of awesome striped shorts – they’re so nautical chic! For an interesting contrast, I paired the shorts with this cool soft blue button-up blouse. To add those pops of color to the mix, I picked out a pair of red studded earrings, and a fun pair of bumblebee striped flats. And last but not least, to keep that noggin of yours company, I found a simple but cool black hat.

3. Melissa Tammerijn by Andreas Larsson for 10 Magazine

Melissa Tammerijn by Andreas Larsson for 10 Magazine
(To see the rest of this editorial, check out the source, FashionGoneRogue.)

10 Magazine’s ’70s disco editorial is too cute for words! With its loud, bright colors, pretty pop of print, and minimalist background, what’s not to love about this photo? I’m obsessed with the fun lively mood, and I can’t get enough of the precious poodle/model relationship! So adorable.

Outfit inspired by Melissa Tammerijn by Andreas Larsson for 10 Magazine
(Flats, Dress, Bag, Earrings)

To create a similar look, I stayed true to the colors in the picture and started off by picking out a lovely printed dress that’s perfect for a summer’s day. I then paired the dress with a double whammy of bows – one pair of bowtie ballet flats, and a cute mini bag with a hello kitty-esque bow attached. Finally, to complete the look, I picked out an adorable pair of heart shaped earrings. Zooey Deschanel, eat your heart out.

Thoughts?

What do you guys think of this month’s batch of editorials? What was your favorite? What about the outfits I put together? Did you love them or hate them? How are you planning to embrace the summer sun? Whatever your thoughts, let me know in the comments!

Top 5 Spring 2011 Trends to Try   April 6th, 2011

Trends

Fashion’s favorite season has finally arrived! The weather is getting warmer, in around eight weeks, the semester will be officially over, and there are tons of hot new clothing items just hitting the stores every day. Yup, it’s officially time to start building that spring wardrobe, if you haven’t started already!

This season, the hottest trends all center around looking interesting, effortless and carefree. If you plan to follow your spring cleaning with spring shopping and want to add a few of the season’s trendiest pieces to your wardrobe, read on! We’ll show you the top five hottest fashion trends for spring 2011 to add to your shopping list.

1. Platform Wedges

Wedges
Product Information: Ankle Strap Wedges – ASOS, Bumper Zena21 Wedge Booties – Cutesy Girl, Floral Platform Wedges – Forever 21, Polka Dot Espadrilles – Payless, DV by Dolce Vita Gladiator Wedges – Lori’s Shoes.

A nod to the ’70s-inspired trends that dominated the season’s runways, platform wedges are a chic way to give yourself some height and make your legs took great. The throwback style is feminine and flirtatious, and because of a huge variety in styles, (choose from espadrilles, clog bottoms, wooden heels, ankle straps, or wedge booties!) they can be worked into almost every wardrobe and individual outfit for a fun touch of spring.

Among the easiest-to-walk-in varieties of height-enhancing shoes on the market, platform wedges can work both on and off campus in warmer months: Simply keep your skinny jeans and a light scarf, trade jewel tones for pastel or floral print, and toss winter boots in favor of the wedge! It couldn’t be an easier transition.

2. Asymmetrical Hemlines

Asymmetrical hemlines
Product Information: Sheer Top – Modcloth, Uneven Yellow Tank – Karmaloop, Print Tank – Nordstrom, Ditsy Plunge Dress – Nasty Gal, Minkpink Uneven Tunic Dress – Fashion Beans, Grey Check Layered Skirt – Topshop, LnA V-Neck Tee – Repertoire Fashion, Embellished Dipped Hem Dress – Fashion Beans, Dipped Hem Sequin Cardigan – Debenhams.

Think of this season’s asymmetrical hemline trend as a “reverse fashion mullet” — short in the front, long in the back! Asymmetrical hemlines (also known as “dip” or “tail” hems), made their last appearance in the crop top trend, but the style has expanded and now includes cardigans, tank tops, skirts, and dresses.

Uneven, loose proportions and unbalanced tops paired with tight bottoms (or the reverse – asymmetrical bottoms and tight tops) create a look that’s effortless and captivating — the best of both worlds! Layer up under tops to minimize skin exposure and go for flat shoes or sandals for a subtly-sexy vibe. Skater-inspired, asymmetrical skirts and dresses will show off toned legs and a summer tan and look great with strappy flats.

3. Chambray

Chambray
Product Information: Chambray Skirt – River Island, Chambray Bikini Top – Net-a-Porter, Chambray Headscarf – Urban Outfitters, Chambray Skirt – Aerie, TOMS Chambray Sneaker – Nordstrom, Chambray Button-Up – Aeropostale, Chambray Romper – Hollister, Crosshatch Chambray Shirt – Net-a-Porter.

An all-season fashionista favorite of 2010, chambray is back in a big way for Spring 2011! The casual denim fabric is showing up everywhere from shoes to dresses to accessories.

Our favorite way to wear it, however, is with a classic chambray shirt, a style that’s flattering, super comfortable, and looks chic year round. Whether you’re doing a summer Sperrys + shorts + chambray combo on the boat, or a quirky double denim look with dark wash skinnies and a turban headband, the chambray shirt is a new college classic! Learn more about this trend with our tips on how to wear chambray.

4. Boho-Inspired Jewelry

Gypsy
Product Information: Crystal Ring – Zappos, Multi-Layer Necklace – Piperlime, Multi-Stone Chandelier Earrings – Charm and Chain, Bangle Set – G by Guess, Multi Band Ring – Topshop, Chain-Link Feather Necklace – GoJane, Conch Shell Drop Earrings – ASOS, Multicolor Beaded Bracelet Set – Fantasy Jewelry Box, Studded Bangle Set – Zappos, Multi Wrap Bracelet – Need Supply Co.

From our favorite feather hair extensions to draping chain necklaces, boho-inspired jewelry is one of Spring 2011′s hottest trends in accessories. If your style is simple but largely accessory-driven, this look is for you! Stock up on pieces with fringe or feathers and mix things up by combining multiple textures and materials — try a thin, hammered gold ring + a wooden bracelet.

Of course, the “boho-inspired” heading need not only apply to the type of jewelry you purchase, but also how you style your accessories. Go for stacks of bangles, multiple rings, and layer upon layer of necklaces to portray a glamorous, gypsy-inspired vibe.

5. Maxi Skirts

Maxi skirts
Product Information: Paisley Maxi Skirt – Ruche, Full Maxi Skirt – ASOS, Starlight Maxi Skirt – Forever 21, BB Dakota Hutchinson Skirt – Karmaloop, All About Eve Marina Maxi Skirt – Surfstich, MICHAEL Michael Kors Tie-dye Maxi Skirt – Net-a-Porter.

An alternative option to the mini skirt/asymmetrical hem trend, the maxi skirt is huge for spring! Totally bohemian and a model-off-duty staple, this particular incarnation of the trend calls for soft flirty jersey, a hemline that just grazes the feet, and a low waist, and rejects excess volume, ankle hems, and granny prints. It’s a near-perfect alternative to sweats to throw on for days that you wish you could have stayed in bed — you’ll be cozy, but look awesome! It doesn’t get better than that!

ssr

As of yesterday, spring has officially arrived! Unfortunately the weather seems to have recieved the memo late- I don’t know how it is where you live, but it’s still pretty chilly out here in “Sunny” California.

However, even though the weather may still be a bit nippy, that doesn’t mean you can’t start celebrating spring right now! By pulling out pieces from your spring wardrobe, and mixing them with fall staples, you can achieve a fresh look that is transitional and chic. After all, that is what the lovely ladies I chose for this month’s Street Style Roundup managed to do! Ready to check them out? Scroll on down!

This outfit is definitely a head-turner and I love everything about it. Our friend manages to look a bit over-the-top, yet totally elegant at the same time – not an easy feat to achieve. And don’t even get me started on that fabulous (FABULOUS!) sun hat. Sun hats have been on my “must-buy” list this whole season, so I’m kind of obsessed with them.

Anywho, to help you recreate our friend’s look, I first went hunting for a coat. What I ended up with was a fabulous ’60s-esque capelet that can be thrown over the shoulders to keep the wind from ruffling your feathers. Continuing the outfit, I picked out a gorgeous cutout blouse and simple black mini skirt. And for your feet, I found a pair of stylish white cutout heels by Qupid (unfortunately they’re sold out but we’ll update the link if we find them elsewhere!) – perfect for a day out and about. Finally, to put the icing on the cake, I found an elegant black sun hat to keep the sun off your pretty little face and leave you feeling like a million bucks.

This next outfit is from one of my personal favorite street style icons, top model Hyoni Kang. Always stylish, but never overdone, Hyoni always manages to look cool and pull off that “just threw it on” aesthetic. I love how she’s rocking a graphic tee and jeans, but also accents her look with cool socks and a fun jacket. These pieces add depth to her outfit instead of keeping things “trendy.”

To get an inspired look, I took color cues from Hyoni’s outfit, and tried to find pieces that were both fun and breezy. To start off the look, I found this cute Mickey Mouse graphic tee and paired it with these amazing floral jeans that I am seriously coveting as I type this. I then found these wild leopard print shoes and paired them with a nice, neutral-colored cardigan. Finally, to keep your things organized, I picked out a roomy green satchel so wherever you go, you’ll have everything you need with you. Throw on this outfit and you’ll feel stylish without feeling stuffy.

This outfit is such eye candy for me – with so much style in one look, it’s hard for me to figure out what to gush about first. But I gotta say, I love the socks. They pop out and are a perfect “outfit changer” – something every fashionista needs.

To get a similar look, I first found this awesome faux fur lined coat that reminds me of something you’d see worn on Mad Men. I then paired that with a sexy, yet still classy, striped dress and simple oxford heels. Taking cues from the photo, I also included some blue socks and a red colored bag. Finally, I left the hat off for a more spring-appropriate ensemble, but you could always add one if you’re feeling extra bold (or cold).

Thoughts?

What did you guys think of the looks I picked out? Did you love them? Hate them? What about the looks I put together? Which was your favorite? Whatever your thoughts, let me know in the comments!

Spring Flowers

Although we’re not even a week into February, according to Punxsutawney Phil, spring is in fact just around the corner. Yes, despite the frigid weather and dreary skies, soon enough, warmer weather will be on its way.

If you’re still antsy about waiting for springtime, why not try out one of the season’s trendy colors now? This year, the colors just scream spring, so they’re sure to cure even the gloomiest of winter blues.

Here are the five colors you will be seeing everywhere this spring:

1. Pink

Pink

If you keep up with color trends, you’ll know that honeysuckle is 2011′s “it” color. The rich pink shade is both girly and sweet and works as a great base for many different looks. For example, you can pair the color with orange or yellow and wear multiple brights together or keep your look classic by pairing a pink top with denim or khakis. The possibilities are endless, so invest in a new pink item (or two!) for spring.

Try it out:

Pink Clothing and Accessories
Shorts, Converse, Lipstick, Blouse, Bracelet, Skirt

2. Bright Orange

Orange

As Caitlyn wrote in this week’s “Would You Wear?”, bright orange will also be a huge color trend this spring. This citrus-y hue is sure to make a bright and bold impact. Since it’s still so cold out, try this trend out with an accessory or even rock some orange nail polish. Once springtime hits, be sure to try orange on season-appropriate pieces like sundresses, sandals and bikinis.

Try it out:

Orange Clothing and Accessories
Cardigan, Necklace, Dress, Nail Polish, Pants, Wedges

3. Yellow

Yellow

Is there any color out there cheerier than yellow? This spring, stores will be carrying a range of yellow-colored clothing and accessories, in shades ranging from deep marigolds to soft, buttery hues. Since yellow is one of the trickier shades to wear, be sure to find your perfect shade by using our easy, how-to guide.

Try it out:

Yellow Clothing and Accessories
Dress, Clutch, Skirt, Flats, Top, Earrings

4. Tropical Blue

Tropical Blue

If you just can’t wait for spring break, you can get the feeling of a tropical island by wearing an item in this gorgeous blue shade. Just like pink, blue is another versatile color that will translate into many different looks. Be sure to pair it with white to give off that ultimate springtime-y feel.

Try it out:

Blue Clothing and Accessories
Top, Bag, Bracelet, Sandals, Skirt, Dress

5. Lavender

Lavender

If you want a change from all the bright springtime hues, muted lavender will also be a popular springtime shade worth trying. This dreamy and soft shade is a cross between purple and gray and adds a sophisticated vibe to any wardrobe. You could even use some lavender eyeshadow to spice up your basic smokey eye.

Try it out:

Lavender Clothing and Accessories
Dress, Pumps, Blouse, Tank Top, Eyeshadow, Scarf

Thoughts?

What do you think of these hues? Which of spring’s hottest shades is your fave? Do you like to wear “trendy” colors? Be sure to leave a comment and let me know your thoughts!

With the flood of Spring/Summer 2011 ad campaigns coming in, just as interesting as the items being displayed, the theme of the campaigns, and how the clothes are styled, are the bodies and faces chosen to show them off. It’s always exciting to see which top models have made it into the campaigns, and which new girls are sure to rise to the top of the modeling world after appearing in the ads.

For the next installment of our Models 101 column, I’m going to break down who’s starring in which ad campaigns this season, and what these choices mean for the fashion world. Read on to find out!

The Pros

These are the women that took the fashion world by storm and never stopped to look back. They represent the epitome of career longevity, and exemplify the idea of ageless beauty. Amongst the endless slew of new faces arriving at modeling agencies every day, The Pros don’t even wince. Here are some of the Pros starring in Spring/Summer 2011 ad campaigns:

Chanel S/S 2011 – Stella Tennant & Ines de la Fressange

Chanel S/S 11

Chanel’s newest campaign, seen above, utilizes the iconic faces of Stella Tennant and Ines de la Fressange. Tennant, at 31 years old, has been modeling since the early ’90s and has had an enviably consistent career since then. Tennant was recently featured with her two daughters for H&M‘s holiday campaign, and for Fall/Winter 2011, she appeared in Balenciaga and Salvatore Ferragamo ads, along with numerous prestigious editorials.

Fressange, on the other hand, was the first girl to sign an exclusive contract with Chanel back in the 1980s and had been lying low in the modeling world until appearing on the Chanel S/S 11 runway a few months ago. In the time between, the 51-year-old Fressange stayed relevant by dabbling in designing, and by consulting for major fashion players like Jean-Paul Gaultier.

In the ad above, for Chanel Spring/Summer 2011, these two legends teamed up with Freja Beha Erichson and Baptiste Giabicone for a Chanel-laden whimsical tea party. Who wouldn’t die to be on that guest list?

Louis Vuitton S/S 2011 – Kristen McMenamy, Freja Beha Erichson & Raquel Zimmerman

Louis Vuitton also chose to feature a blast from the past in its latest ads. Above, Kristen McMenamy is shown with Freja Beha Erichson and Raquel Zimmerman for these seductive and glossy Asian-inspired shots. McMenamy’s appealing androgynous look first put her in the spotlight in the ’80s, and at 46, she’s showing the world that time has only enhanced her beauty.

Modern Supers

Household names who got their start after the definitive Big Six (Kate, Naomi, Claudia, Christy, Linda, Cindy) made their mark as the supermodels of the ’90s are what I like to call Modern Supers. These are generally the most well-paid models, and they tend to have more athletic bodies than traditional runway models.

Although the Modern Supers are definitely part of the high-fashion world, many got their starts thanks to commercial jobs that eventually launched them into more versatile careers. For many, this commercial start involved working for big brand names like Victoria’s Secret. Below are a few Spring/Summer 2011 ad campaigns featuring Modern Supers.

Balenciaga S/S 2011 – Gisele Bundchen

Gisele Bundchen Balenciaga

Balenciaga made a statement this season by casting stunner Gisele Bundchen in their S/S 11 campaign. With Bundchen, everyone feels compelled to stop and look, and her Balenciaga ads are no exception – they’re totally attention-grabbing. With a basic backdrop and no-fuss posing or styling, Gisele, and the Balenciaga wares, are able to shine through.

Bottega Veneta S/S 2011 – Karolina Kurkova

Bottega Veneta S/S 11

Bottega Veneta also cast an extremely familiar face this season when they chose Karolina Kurkova to star in their latest campaign. The leggy blond is another girl whose career is always being observed and commented on, so any house that chooses to feature her will not only undoubtedly end up with breathtaking photos, but a major publicity boost as well. In this campaign, Kurkova takes center stage matching either a black bird or an airplane that flies above her, capturing her full attention.

Latest Girls

While these may be common names to anyone observant of the fashion world, the Latest Girls are definitely at the top of their game but have yet to reach household-name status. These models have only been on the scene for a few seasons, making them some of the youngest of the bunch appearing in campaigns for the next season. Here are two ad campaigns where some of the Latest Girls are being featured for spring.

Dior S/S 2011 – Karlie Kloss

Dior S/S 11

Dior has chosen Karlie Kloss for a third time to showcase their latest collection in ad campaigns. Kloss is an unstoppable force in the modeling industry, keeping a spot in Models.com’s Top 50 models list month after month (generally falling in the top 5). For Dior, she appears as a beach-babe-meets-pinup-girl this season. Like Balenciaga’s ads with Gisele, Kloss’ ads need no background or styling embellishments. Kloss’ fierce stare and flawless skin alone are enough to force onlookers to stop and check this ad out.

Mulberry S/S 2011 – Lindsey Wixon & Nimue Smit

Mulberry S/S 11

Mulberry’s S/S 11 campaign stars Lindsey Wixon, a girl whose career only began a little over a year ago, but is already a regular in major editorials and ads. Wixson caught everyone’s attention with her doll-like look and demeanor in Miu Miu’s S/S ’10 ads, and her career has been hot ever since. In the Mulberry ads, Wixson appears with Nimue Smit, and the pair, looking like fiery-haired twins, are hard to peel your eyes away from.

Thoughts?

What are your favorite ads of the season so far? Even with all the standard faces being used, there are plenty of new girls out there – have any of their campaigns caught your eye? Let me know!
