Live Blog: Class 2a Girls Soccer State Championship February 11th, 2012
TAMPA — American Heritage-Delray knows how to play in state title games, and on Friday, the Stallions used the knowledge of eight consecutive final appearances against Jacksonville’s Bolles.
Heritage dominated all 80 minutes of play in the Class 2A state final, overpowering the Bulldogs to win by a 5-0 margin giving the school a third consecutive state title on a rain-soaked Corbett Field on the University of South Florida Campus.
“You don’t want to say that any one is more special than the other,” Heritage coach and five-time state title winner Steve Burgess said. “I think this is the most special one for me personally. I’m very proud and very pleased.”
Bolles (18-9-2) only mustered three shots on goal in the game — Heritage (27-2-1) brought an onslaught of 13.
Tatiana Panagos had two goals and an assist in the win, but the star was left wing Yulie Lopez. The Heritage junior didn’t enter the scorebook until the 54th minute, but she was a one-person attack for the Stallions throughout. Lopez ended the game with two goals, but she created a dozen scoring chances for Heritage.
“Fantastic player,” Bolles coach Matt Tracy said of Lopez. “Even in the first half, when it was only 1-0, I still thought she was the dominant player on the pitch. It took a second, and a third, and sometimes even a fourth defender to try to contain her.”
American Heritage wasted little time to score its first goal. Penagos dribbled though the box in the eighth minute and blasted a shot inside the left post to score her 24th goal of the year, unassisted.
Rain started to fall after Penagos’ goal, but it did nothing to bog down the Heritage attack.
Lopez was injured after being drawing a free kick with 15 minutes remaining in the first half. Taken down from behind, Lopez rose to her feet slowly and hobbled away from the play, but she was able to say in the game.
Bolles took advantage of the limited Lopez and created a strong chance in the moments after the foul. That’s when a three-on-three counterattack ended with Bolles’ Naomi O’Leary slamming a shot off the crossbar that deflected out of play.
The play was Bolles’ the best — and last — scoring chance
The opening minutes of the second half brought Heritage’s second goal. Three more followed. The scoring started when Sabrina Chung clinically placed a shot from the right ride of goal past Bolles keeper Carly Stevens. The 47th-minute goal was Chung’s 16th of the season.
It was a also a momentum shift that Bolles couldn’t handle.
“We left halftime believing,” Tracy said. “But the difference between 1-0 and 2-0 is huge. At that point you have to think about how to get two goals back.”
Soon thereafter, Bolles was looking to get back three, four and eventually five goals.
Lopez scored her 51st goal of the season in the 54th minute. Panagos scored her second goal of the game off a corner kick three-and-a-half minutes later, when the ball pinballed on the legs of attackers and defenders. Eventually, Panagos was able to square up the ball and she roofed it from point-blank range.
The remaining 20 minutes of the game were an exhibition in “keep away.” Much of the possession was held by Lopez, who dribbled up, through, around and past Bolles defenders on field-spanning runs. One such run ended in Lopez’ second goal of the game, when she outfoxed six Bolles defenders and the goalie to extend the lead to 5-0.

How we got here: Miramar’s path to the championship game. December 18th, 2011
Sept. 9: at Blanche Ely
Win 31-9
Miramar started their season with a win that ended peculiarly. After thunderstorms postponed the start of the game by nearly two hours, the game was called with 1:17 remaining in the third quarter. Marrell Jackson had two interceptions in the game.
Sept. 16: vs. Northeast
Win 48-6
Cam Hudge helped Miramar avenge the Patriots’ 2010 playoff loss to Northeast with a shellacking of Northeast. Hudge ran for a touchdown and threw for another score, completing 10 of 16 passes for 157 yards to go along with his 51 rushing yards.
Sept. 23: vs. West Broward
Win 47-0
Miramar opened up District 12-8A play with a dominant performance over an overmatched West Broward. Hudge threw for 235 yards and scored five touchdowns (four passing, one rushing), and Tracy Howard had a touchdown catch in the game.
Sept. 30: at Cypress Bay
Win 20-0
“It was a statement game” Hudge said after the Patriots defeated division rival Lightning by posting their second consecutive shutout. Malcolm Lewis had a 47-yard touchdown reception in the win.
Oct. 06: at St. Thomas Aquinas
Win 27-20 (OT)
The “darkside” defense blocked a late fourth-quarter field goal to force overtime, and D’Vontis Arnold’s touchdown was the difference to upset the then-No.1 Raiders. The Patriots took over the No. 1 ranking, jumped to the top-10 in national polls and ended St. Thomas’ quest to win a second-consecutive national championship.
Oct. 14: vs. Boyd Anderson
Win 42-6
The new top team in Broward vanquished the upset minded, upstart, No. 4 Cobras. Running back Alex Lee had 116 yards in the win and Marrell Jackson had another two-interception game.
Oct. 21: at Everglades
Win 42-20
The Patriots won the cross-town rivalry by starting the game with 28 unanswered points. Hudge had another five touchdown game and passed for 300 yards in the effort. Everglades looked to make a game of it late, but Jermaine Grace’s late interception sealed the victory.
Oct. 28: at Western
Win 35-3
Miramar clinched the district title with a dominant performance over Western. The Patriot defense held Fabian Moreau and the Wildcats to one rushing yard while Lee ran 151 yards.
Nov. 4: Flanagan
Win 20-16
The Patriots came out flat and had to come from behind to beat division-rival Flanagan. Howard’s fourth-quarter interception deep in Miramar territory sealed the win and maintained the undefeated season in the final game of the regular season.
Nov. 18: South Plantation
Win 38-0
A down game against Flanagan? What down game against Flanagan? Miramar rocked the Paladins behind Arnold’s 117 second-half rushing yards while the defense minimized the impact of South Plant’s star running back, Alex Collins, who averaged less than four yards a carry.
Nov. 25: Cypress Bay
Win 23-7
In a game coach Damon Cogdell called Miramar’s biggest test,” Tracy Howard had an interception and the “darkside” did not allow a touchdown on the night as the Patriots advanced to the next round.
Dec. 2: Palm Beach Gardens
Win 35-7
Gardens drove 87 yards on the first possession of the game and scored with ease. They didn’t score again, as Tracy Howard sparked his team on a 52-yard punt return for a touchdown and added an interception for good measure. Mark Rucker had 13 tackles in the game.
Dec. 9: Columbus
Win 14-6
After a scoreless first half, Hudge and the Miramar offense rattled off two third-quarter touchdowns and the defense did the rest, as the Patriots advanced to the state title game.

FHSAA changing venues for Spring State Championship Series June 12th, 2011
I guess the theory to keep many of the Florida High School Athletic Association State Championship sites centrally located went bye-bye.
The FHSAA announced Thursday offered contracts to several news sites to host championships for Spring Sports.
Fill up the gas tanks now because the State Track and Field Championships will be moving from Showalter Field in Winter Park to the University of North Florida in Jacksonville. Also on the move is the Flag Football Championships, previously held in Boca Raton the past seven years, to Gene Cox Stadium in Tallahassee; Boys Volleyball from St. Andrew’s in Boca Raton to the Silver Spurs Arena in Kissimmee and Softball from the national Training Center in Clermont to the University of South Florida in Tampa.
Baseball, Lacrosse and tennis venues did not change.
