Lately, I have become stuck in a movie rut trying to find new things to watch. This got me thinking about some of my favorites that I know are popular around campus and among my friends. So without further ado, here are the top 10 movies every college student should have in their collection!
The Princess Bride (1987)
Don’t let the title fool you, this definitely isn’t a comedy just for girls. Based upon the book by the same name, it’s romantic, hilarious, and full of swashbuckling – not to mention ultra-quotable! The nice thing is that you don’t have to have read the book to understand the story. A classic tale with some definite twists, this movie will no doubt remain popular far into the future. I honestly don’t know anyone that doesn’t like this movie.

With a great cast and an amazing plot full of adventure, humor, and romance, it’s hard to believe that this tale was based off of the Disney ride of the same name. It is definitely a favorite movie around campus for both the male and female population, and a perpetual pick for movie nights.

Based on the book by Jane Austen, this movie shows the difficulties of love, life, and the separation of classes within the regency era. Elizabeth Bennett and her sisters are pressured to marry in order to improve the family status. Full of romance, this costume drama is a timeless story that is definitely great for a night in with the girls.
Toy Story 3 (2010)
Most of us are no strangers to the Toy Story trilogy and have literally grown up with Andy through the years. This time, Andy is going off to college, leaving Buzz and Woody to take one last adventure as Andy’s toys. A fantastic film that especially hits home for college-aged students, this movie is a great addition to your college collection – just have the tissues handy!
Mean Girls (2004)
Perhaps the most quotable movie of our generation, Mean Girls is a hilarious and reality-based movie focused around high school culture and the cliques, backstabbing, and social warfare that we’ve all experienced in HS. The best part? The ending to the story has a great moral about being kind to everyone, even if they aren’t kind to you. My friends and I love to quote this movie!

Truly a hilarious and uplifting movie, Legally Blonde is a favorite for almost every girl. It’s especially great if you are looking for a light story after a rough day of classes or just want to chill out and relax! This is also a perpetual favorite for girls nights in.

Crazy popular among my friends and around campus, this comic book movie tells the story of how a man named Tony Stark becomes the superhero Iron Man and saves the day. Though the movie is mostly action-based, there are also elements of romance and comedy… and, hi, Robert Downey Jr. If you’re having a party that isn’t just confined to your girlfriends, Iron Man is a safe choice for a movie that almost everyone will enjoy.
The Young Victoria (2009)
Okay, okay…so this may not be the most popular film out there. However, if you haven’t seen this movie yet, you definitely need to soon. This beautiful film follows the first years of Queen Victoria’s reign and the surprising romance that influenced a nation. Truly a romantic and heartfelt story, I think this movie deserves more popularity. Those I know who have seen it love it – it’s the perfect romance movie to watch with girlfriends.

1. Most Students Despise College Applications
Don’t be surprised if your student suddenly catches a case of “senioritis” and begins to balk at the whole idea of applying for college in the thick of college application season. (And don’t think I was immune just because I have 12 years of experience in this field – my son still had a meltdown moment when it was his turn to fill out those applications!)
It doesn’t matter how excited a student is about the upcoming college years, for most of our children the application process can be simply overwhelming at some point along the way. After all, students feel they are – in a matter of months – making huge decisions about the next four years of their lives. They know their lives will change dramatically as far as who their friends will be, what their learning environment will be, where they will be living and how competitive they will be in the post-grad job market. It certainly can be intimidating!
That said, offer your student advice and feedback when it is asked for. Be encouraging and let your student know that you have faith in him or her to make the right decisions. You may even have a few good stories of your own to tell your student about when you were at the same cross road in your life. Remind your student that the whole application process will be over in a couple of months – a small blip in the timeline of the high school and college years.
2. Gimmicks are a No-No
There are lots of “Do’s” and “Don’ts” when it comes to the college application process, but one of the biggest faux pas admissions officers complain about are gimmicky applications. Students should focus on their uniquenesses and strive to let their personality come out in the application. 4. Be Yourself
It may sound cheesy, but students should try to be open and honest about themselves in their applications. This doesn’t mean students should write their personal statement without proper writing etiquette – proof reading is key, and internet or texting slang is a definite no-no! Instead they should try to share some heartfelt details that communicate their core values.
Admissions officers are not looking for a flawless application–in fact, a perfect application can sometimes be a red flag. Instead, they are looking for a student who will likely succeed in their school’s environment and add an interesting dimension to the freshman class. If your child appears to be worried about how he or she will come across, or is clinging to the fear of getting rejected, remind him or her that sharing a realistic self-portrait will be a sure-fire way to help the college decide if it will be a good fit for your student, not the other way around. If your student has truly taken the time to research various colleges and has narrowed the college list down to schools that would be a good fit both academically and otherwise, he or she needs to demonstrate to the admissions office in the application why that is the case.
5. Preparation is Important
The college application process can be competitive (that’s part of the reason so many students despise the process), but good preparation can take a lot of pressure off your student. Can’t figure out the laundry thing, or want a recommendation for a fun off-campus excursion? Talk to your resident advisor (RA)!
2. Watch Your Wallet. It’s easy to get swept up in the swirl of social events and the freedom of managing your own cash, but don’t get spendy too quickly! Your class schedule can be different every day of the week, your professors probably aren’t taking role in every class, and you might even find yourself with huge hour blocks with nothing scheduled–or even entire class-free days. Building yourself a schedule can help you make time for a job, social life, study time, and all those to-do list items in between.
While you’re at it, learn how to create an easy semester study calendar so you don’t get (too) behind in class.
4. Get Involved. If this is your first time away from your family, friends, and everything familiar, homesickness is bound to strike at some point. Getting involved in your college community can help you beat homesickness, make new friends, and (bonus) give you something new to add to your resume. Talk to your RA to find out what kinds of clubs, religious groups, service organizations, and other activities you can get involved with on or near campus, and give a few of them a shot.
And remember–be active when it comes to meeting new people. Even the simple act of leaving your door open when you’re in your room can help you get to know the other students on your floor.
5. Have a Little Faith. Maybe it sounds cheesy, but have a little faith in yourself. College is a big, exciting, and often overwhelming experience, so give yourself time to adjust. The campus may seem huge, but you will learn your way around. The same applies for new roommates, classes, and friendships: give yourself time to learn and adjust, and be patient! All your freshman peers are feeling the pressure, too.
