What I really love about fashion is the subtle details of an outfit that often goes unnoticed at first glance. In Ana‘s case, I was immediately struck by the sophistication of her flowy H&M blouse and high-waisted Tory Burch pants. Though it wasn’t until I reviewed my photographs that I really understood how connected and purposeful every accessory really was to her ensemble.

The next time you see someone walk by wearing an interesting outfit, be sure and take a closer look! Ana’s style perfectly demonstrates how the little unexpected details can really make a look special.

Let’s Talk Fashion

How would you describe your sense of style? “I’m not sure, I try to be as un-casual as possible. I try to stand out!”

Tell me about this outfit in particular. What made you choose it and bring these pieces together? “I’m really into black and white and I’ve had this shirt for a while. Today I actually tried to be more casual, and I usually don’t really wear heels but these are Jimmy Choo and they were on sale so I could not pass them up.”

Do you have any fashion advice for other students? “Don’t do anything that you’re not comfortable with. Don’t care about what other people think, just dress in whatever you want to.”

What are your favorite trends right now? “Right now… really bright colors for spring. I know that pastel colors are really spring-ish, but really bright colors call my attention.”

Do you have a favorite fashion designer, and if so, who? “Probably Balenciaga. I think that it’s very modern. Other designers try to be more conservative, but Balenciaga is more out there.”

What do you do for fun? Do you have any hobbies or interests that have contributed to your fashion philosophy? “I’m definitely online a lot, so I check out a lot of fashion stuff. I usually check Tumblr for inspiration. I love when blogs post pictures from right off the runway.”

If you could raid anyone’s closet, who would it be? Blair Waldorf”s! It’s very preppy. I don’t feel like I’m like that, but I would like at some point in my life to try it out. If anything I’d like to try to mix our styles up and find a balance to make it classy, yet modern.”

Elements of Ana’s Outfit

1. Studded Collar

studded collar blouse UNLV campus style

Ana’s flowy H&M blouse is soft and feminine with a surprise: a silver-studded Peter Pan collar! The studs add a contrasting texture to the shirt and contribute brightness and visual interest. The sparkling silver studs eliminate the need for a necklace or earrings because they capture the light and draw attention on their own.

2. Mixed Metal Jewelry

UNLV campus style- mixed metal jewelry

By mixing metals in her watch, bracelet and ring, Ana is able to tie in the gold detailing of her shoes and purse chain with the silver studs of her shirt. She shared that most of her jewelry is either given to her as a gift or is a family heirloom from her grandmother.

3. Elegant Sandals

Jimmy Choo sandals as seen at UNLV

Ana couldn’t pass up these Jimmy Choo sandals when she spotted them on sale at Saks. (We are totally jealous!) The interlaced black and gold straps give the shoes an elegant, art-deco appearance.

4. Chanel Purse

Chanel purse campus style at UNLV

Like her sandals, Ana’s Chanel purse combines black and gold detailing in the straps. The gold chain is threaded with a black ribbon, giving the straps contrast using colors and textures. The quilted pattern of the black leather also adds textural interest. It’s obviously rare to see Chanel on a college campus, so we’re totally obsessed with (and jealous of!) Ana’s drool-worthy tote.

What do you think?

Do you like Ana’s outfit? What do you think of the black and white contrast she’s playing with? Do you love her Peter Pan collar as much as we do? Let us know in the comments below!

Celina is in my Media Law class, and I’ve always noticed her classy and preppy sense of style. After a couple weeks of gloomy weather, Celina’s bright outfit stood out on campus and made me so excited for spring!

Who or what inspires your style? “My mom! She has amazing taste in fashion and is always aware of the latest styles and trends.”

How would you describe your sense of style? “Sometimes preppy, but more professional. I am always wearing high heels and blazers. I love blazers; they are so classic.”

Why did you choose this particular outfit? “The outfit I have on today is more on the casual side, but it’s fun and comfortable, too. My yellow jeans are from Bloomingdale’s, my boots are from Michael Kors, and my sweater is from J.Crew. Sometimes I need a day just to be casual and dress down.”

What fashion advice would you give to other students looking to improve their style? “Make sure that your outfits are always appropriate, and most importantly make sure that you feel comfortable in whatever you have on. I would suggest looking on my two favorite sample sale sites online — Rue La La and the Gilt Groupe – all of the clothes on those online sites are fabulous and are usually deeply discounted.”

What are your favorite trends right now? “I love color blocking. For example, I have a pair of light pink pants with black stripes down the sides. I also love colored pants and wearing high socks or knee-highs that show above my boots.”

Do you have any favorite designers? If so, who? “Yes! I love, love, love Michael Kors – I adore everything from his watches to his purses to his clothes. I also love Marc Jacobs, Roberto Cavalli, Ted Baker, Alice and Olivia, and Kate Spade.”

If you could raid anyone’s closet, whose would it be and why? “This is a tough one, but I think I would pick Rachel Bilson. I always loved her style on the red carpet, and whenever I see her in magazines and in interviews she always looks fabulous.”

What do you do for fun? Do you have any unique hobbies or interests? “I love to just relax, go to the movies, and hang out with my friends. I also love to travel. My family and I try to go to different destinations every year!”

Elements of Celina’s Outfit

1. Striped Lavender Top with Mustard-Colored Pants

Point Park University style: Striped lavender top with mustard pants

Celina’s bold outfit color scheme seems to scream “spring is here!” – purple and yellow are complementary colors (or opposites on the color wheel), so they look great when paired together. This particular color combo – a light purple and a deep mustard – is perfect for that transitional season between the end of winter and the beginning of spring.

2. Striped Bag

Point Park University style: Striped bag

I am so envious of Celina’s bag! The black-and-white striped pattern fits well with her mustard yellow pants and lavender top, while also adding a professional, classically preppy vibe to her ensemble.

What do you think?

Welcome to the latest edition of Looks from Books, which aims to prove that you can look smart, while still being book-smart, too. Fashion inspiration can be found between the pages of your favorite stories, on well-designed book covers, and in your favorite characters… if you read closely enough.

This week, we’re focusing on The Catcher in the Rye, a classic novel that most of you have probably read, whether for school or for pleasure (or maybe a bit of both). Let’s get started!

Catcher in the rye cover
Catcher in the Rye book cover via Amazon

Inside Cover: A Little Bit of Background

The Catcher in the Rye is an iconic mid-20th-century novel by J.D. Salinger. This coming-of-age story follows the narrator, sixteen-year-old dropout Holden Caulfield, as he wanders around New York City for three days in December, attempting to avoid telling his parents he’s been kicked out of yet another school. After a series of mishaps and misunderstandings, Holden, in the end, learns more about himself, and begins to understand the process of growing older.

Published in 1951, the controversial novel has earned its place as a bookshelf favorite, and has garnered more than a few cries for censorship due to its depictions of sexual deviancy, prostitution, and underage drinking, as well as its excessive use of profanity. Now the calling card for rebellious kids everywhere, the book was originally intended for adults, which explains the heavy subject matter. However, this doesn’t stop the more “hip” English teachers from assigning it in high schools across the country.

A Fashionable Literacy

The Catcher in the Rye has never been adapted for film, at the deliberate request of the author. True to the rebellious nature of the book, J.D. Salinger would not allow anyone – even the likes of Steven Spielberg, Harvey Weinsten, Jack Nicholson, and Leonardo DiCaprio – to attach themselves to the story, despite the ever-increasing popularity of the book. In his will, Salinger left the rights to the novel, as well as any potential for a large-screen adaptation, to his wife and daughter, glad to provide for his family after death, and especially glad that he’d never have to see anyone pretend to be Holden.

However, that isn’t to say that the teenage rebel look hasn’t made its way into the mainstream. Prep school staples like varsity jackets and peter pan collars have proved popular on the runways, while both Christian Dior and Stella McCartney sent off-kilter menswear down the runways for Spring 2013. Both of these trends bring to mind the slightly-skewed attitude of our favorite jaded teen cynic.

How to Add Holden to Your Wardrobe

By integrating key themes from the novel, as well as allusions to the book’s notorious and enthralling history, into your daily outfits, you can pay homage to the mildly-misanthropic teen, without sacrificing too much of your own sense of optimism (but please, everyone, stay in school!).

A Contrast of Attitudes: Mature V. Immature

Catcher in the rye misguided prep outfit
Product Information: Varsity Cardigan – Delia’s, Oversize Blouse – Chicnova, Tweed Peacoat – Tilly’s, Boyfriend Jeans – New Look, Oxfords – Aldo, Hunting Cap – Yesstyle, Knit Mittens – People Tree, Plaid Scarf – Abercrombie & Fitch.

In true bildungsroman form, Catcher focuses primarily on Holden’s aversion to the adult world, and his affinity for, and need to protect, the unspoiled and innocent; in other words, the Mature versus the Immature.

This contrast of attitudes stems mainly from Holden’s disillusionment with life, and his desire to find meaning in the process of growing up. He wants no part of the “phoniness” and superficiality he sees around him, and comes to idealize the simplicity of youth. Fearful of change, and confused by the feelings in himself that he condemns in others, Holden is the unlikely protagonist, while time, and its unstoppable nature, is the ultimate antagonist.

This outfit represents Holden’s battle with age by incorporating classic preppy styles, alluding to prep school uniforms, while wearing them as a kid might, with oversized fits and loose tailoring. The outfit’s many textures and patterns – denim boyfriend jeans, a knit varsity cardigan, leather oxfords, a plaid scarf, and a tweed coat – represent a youthful take on the sophisticated silhouettes of the adult world. The whimsical mix of fabrics, colors, and patterns, constrained to the uniform of Adults, mirrors Holden’s own internal struggle with growing older.

Teenage Angst and Rebellion

Catcher in the rye grunge outfit
Product Information: Plaid Flannel Shirt – Woolrich, Denim Vest – SheInside, Hush Puppies boots – Debenhams, Handstamped Necklace – Etsy, Beanie – All Saints, Studded Belt – Topshop, Catcher in the Rye Fleece – Out of Print Clothing.

Teen angst, adult disparagement, and a partial subplot involving a quest for the perfect record tie Catcher to a music genre that followed a little less than 50 years after the book’s publication: grunge.

It’s easy to see the parallels when you look: Over the course of the novel, Holden smokes, fights, drinks, and behaves badly all across New York, leading the life of a pseudo-rock-star, all while bemoaning the “phonies” of the world. Holden’s bad attitude and dark outlook on the world may have inspired the likes of Kurt Cobain, who was said to have been carrying a copy of the book, as well as wearing a red hunting cap (Holden’s signature accessory) in the weeks prior to his untimely suicide.

Reference Holden’s attitude and angst in your look by incorporating elements of grunge fashion, with enough fleece, flannel, leather, and knitwear to warm New York City at Christmastime. A guitar pick necklace, a knit beanie, and a studded belt add a little edge to your everyday attire, while the inclusion of a plaid button-down, a studded denim vest, and/or Hush Puppy boots will help you step away from the campus status quo. (Of course, The Catcher in the Rye fleece from Out of Print Clothing might accomplish this in a more obvious fashion.)

Unexpected Use of Language

Catcher in the rye word statements outfit
Product Information: Letter Print Blouse – Dorothy Perkins, “I Must Not…” Tee – Topshop, Letters Skater Skirt – Nasty Gal, Moto Print Skinny Jeans – Tophop, Letter Pattern Tights – Asos, Peach Vintage Letters Scarf – Dorothy Perkins.

While lauded for its fresh and engaging voice, Catcher in the Rye is also notorious for its use of unacceptable language, expletives and curse words, as well as its unstructured tone, which is often criticized as juvenile and repetitive. Regardless of your take on his narration style, Salinger’s unexpected use of language has proved to be very influential – many contemporary teen novels, like Stephen Chbosky’s The Perks of Being a Wallflower, have adopted his unstructured style.

Employ Catcher‘s unexpected use of language within your own wardrobe by wearing pieces that integrate words and letters in a creative way. Above, the scarf and blouse display a more restrained take on the trend, while the skirt, pants, and printed tights are more uninhibited and brash in their use of language. Alternatively, you can reference the novel’s legacy directly, with a shirt that reluctantly states, “I must not swear in class.”

What Do You Think?

Have you ever read The Catcher in the Rye, or any other book that has gained so much notoriety? Did you read it for school? What did you think of it? Do you believe it to be worthy of such widespread censorship? What do you think about the outfits and styling tips? Let me know, in the comments below!

Inside Cover: A Little Bit of Background

Anna Karenina is a popular 19th-century novel by Leo Tolstoy. The story details the tragic and tumultuous love life of society woman and aristocrat Anna Karenina, and her affair with the charming Count Vronsky.

The novel also follows Levin, an idealistic, depressed landowner modeled after Tolstoy himself, whose constant ideas for improving his life are shadowed by thoughts of suicide; Kitty Scherbatsky, the young, pure, and beautiful woman Levin loves; and Karenin, Anna’s stoic, loyal, easily-influenced, and indecisive husband.

Well-received since its debut, the novel has earned a permanent place among the literary classics. A favorite of English instructors with hefty appetites (the book is close to 1,000 pages in length), Anna Karenina has also garnered praise from famous Russian authors such as Fyodor Dostoevsky and Vladimir Nabokov.

A Fashionable Literacy

The most recent Anna Karenina film was released in November of last year, starring Keira Knightley as the unhappy socialite, and Jude Law as her imposing husband. The head costume designer for the production was none other than Jacqueline Durran, whose previous work earned Oscar nods for Atonement and Pride and Prejudice, and whose anachronistic and “off-kilter” approach to this classic Russian work is already generating awards season buzz.

Prompted, perhaps, by the film, many designers found inspiration in the 1800s this season, as the luxurious design elements and trends from the time – complete with brocade, fur, and lace motifs – popped up on rivaling Fall 2013 RTW runways, from Dolce & Gabbana to Balmain, Gucci, and Lanvin.

Even commercial retailers got in on the action, as well, as Banana Republic launched an Anna-inspired line this fall coinciding with the film’s release, featuring designs inspired by the classic silhouettes seen in the movie.

How to Add Anna to Your Wardrobe

By integrating key thematic elements from the novel into your daily outfits, you can also achieve this luxurious look, without looking like you’re wearing a period costume. (However, if you want to wear ball gowns to class, that’s your prerogative!)

The Contrast of High Vs. Low Society

Anna Karenina-inspired outfit 1: Velvet dress, military coat, lace tights, boots, gloves, faux fur hat
Product Information: Velvet Skater Dress – Miss Selfridge, Wool Coat – House of Fraser, Lace Tights – New Look, Brogue Boots – H&M, Leather Gloves – Target, Fur Hat – The Hut.

One of the novel’s recurring themes is the juxtaposition of high (aristocratic) and low (provincial) societies. Of historic importance – as the coming century would bring the dawn of Communism for Russia – the ties between the two classes were never so relevant as in this time period. This ideology is often referenced in Levin’s personal musings over his land and his relationships with those who work under him, and is demonstrated in his uneasiness with the glittering galas and operas of the upper class.

This outfit channels this great divide, by contrasting the two classes via “high society” fabrics, like velvet, fur, and lace, against “low society” worked materials, like wool, felt, and leather. The wool, military-style coat mirrors the military presence in Russia at the time, while also alluding to the peasantry. The leather gloves and lace-up brogues are a nod to this as well, as the peasants made and used the material most. The lace tights, velvet skater dress, and fur Cossack-style hat, however, are direct ties to the opulence and magnificence of the 19th-century Russian aristocracy, and their extravagance.

Mortality and Morality

anna-karenina-skull-accessories
Product Information: Skulls and Stars Necklace – Zara, Bird Skull Necklace – Threadsence, Skull Drop Earrings – Nelly, Bone Rings – Wildfox, Fishbone Ring – Romwe, Skull Earrings – Asos.

Anna Karenina examines the effects of passion, love, hatred, and betrayal, and the heated temperaments at play within the novel contrast sharply against the cold, strict religious and societal norms of the time.

The friction created by the need for love, coupled with the denial of that which the world deems scandalous, often results in dangerous actions. Suicide, violence, broken hearts, illness, and death are heavy topics within the novel, and are vital to the dynamics of Anna and Vronsky’s relationship.

You can reference this ideological break in your look with skull and bone motifs. However, to incorporate this thematic element into your wardrobe without looking like the harbinger of death yourself, constrain it to your jewelry. Skull accents in a necklace, or on your earrings, can nonchalantly pay homage, or simple bone rings or animal-based pendants make a bit more of an edgy statement.

Contrast of Movement vs. Restriction

anna-karenina-restriction-outfit-ideas
Product Information: Dress – Miss Selfridge, Belt – Asos, Blazer – American Eagle, Skirt – House of Fraser, Headband (top) – Dorothy Perkins, Headband (middle) – Pier 1, Headband (bottom) – Pier 1.

The societal expectations and limited freedoms for women in 19th-century Russia cause most of the tragedy and drama within Anna Karenina, and no one feels the confinement as strongly as Anna herself. Trapped in a loveless marriage, with the threat of losing everything if she chooses to pursue her dreams, Anna’s world is severely restricted. Adultery is permissable – even expected – for men, while Anna’s love is deemed scandalous and makes her a social outcast.

You can juxtapose the sweeping romance and rigid Russian society within your outfit. For instance, restrain a skater skirt by looping a belt around the waist, creating a contrast between the sleekness of the top and the looseness of the bottom. Or, try layering a fitted blazer over a full skirt, creating the same effect. Finally, pull your locks back with sparkling headbands, and let the rest of your hair flow freely, in reference to the extravagant lifestyle that keeps Anna from freedom.

What do you think?

Have you ever read Anna Karenina, or any similarly-minded Russian novels? Have you had it assigned for an English or Literature class, or a lecture? What did you think of the novel, and the elements at play? Did you see the movie? What did you think of the outfits and styling tips? Let me know, in the comments below!

Gossip girl - Serena van der Woodsen

Photo from Elle.

These are dark times, you guys. After six seasons, “Gossip Girl” is coming to an end. And, okay, maybe it is time to throw in the towel, because any sense of rational plot has been out the window since season three… but still. This is the end of an era.

Gossip Girl’s fashion is as iconic as its beloved characters, so for the next four days, (leading up to the finale – sob!) I’ll be showing you how to steal your favorite character’s most memorable looks.

Starting us off is Serena van der Woodsen, the Upper East Side’s resident bad-girl-gone-good. Played by the gorgeous Blake Lively, Serena is the master of mixing classic pieces with eclectic shapes and textures. Below, we’ll show her evolution from reluctant prep school pariah to the confident, stylish young woman we know and love today. On to the outfits!

Where has she been?

Serena look 1 with brown leather jacket, striped tee, brown satchel, brown belt, gray slouchy boots, black skinnies, and yellow scarf

Jacket, Tee, Jeans, Scarf, Boots, Bag, Belt | Photo: The CW

It’s odd to think that the endlessly mysterious Serena van der Woodsen would return to the city in a conservative leather jacket and classic skinny jeans, but who are we to complain? With all the drama surrounding her return, Serena’s very first outfit gives us a hint that she might not be the crazy, boyfriend-snatching party girl GG makes her out to be. And that’s kind of the moment we all fell in love with her. Girl sure knows how to travel in style.

Make Serena’s premiere look your own by pairing a tan leather jacket with a conservative striped tee. Black skinny jeans and a yellow scarf update this classic look. Accessorize with the basics, like a deep chestnut satchel and a matching belt. Slouchy suede boots complete this polished and casual look.

Prep School Chic

Serena outfit 2 with plaid skirt gray v neck plaid tie sequin vest gold bangles green satchel and brown riding boots

Tee, Skirt, Vest, Tie, Boots, Bag, Bangles | Photo: The CW

Ah, Constance. Did you even have a uniform policy? Though each character managed to add their own personal twist to the prep school dress code, Serena always took things to the next level. Sometimes it worked (I love every single one of her slouchy, sparkly cardigans), and sometimes she looked like she’d just walked out of a Britney Spears video. Either way, her effortless charm was kind of fabulous.

Steal Serena’s blasé boarding school look by pairing a preppy plaid skirt with a slouchy gray v-neck, topping it off with a subtly sequined vest. Very bad-girl-gone-good. Accessorize with classic staples like a bright, structured bag and brown riding boots, adding a touch of sparkle with a pair of gold spiked bangles. Complete the look with a tie, of course. Go full-on Serena and wear it like a necklace, or wrap it around your hair like a headband. I bet even B would be jealous.

The White Party

Serena look 3 with white maxi goddess dress gold hair chain gold gladiator sandals gold bangles gold pearl earrings and sequin clutch

Dress, Hair Necklace, Sandals, Bag, Bangles, Earrings | Photo: The CW

It’s common knowledge that Serena is 100 percent breathtaking 100 percent of the time, especially when she’s all glammed up. But if I had to pick her most stunning formal moment? The white party. Definitely the white party. This outfit captures Serena’s effortless, ethereal beauty perfectly. Honestly, she might as well be a living goddess.

Pretend you’re a member of the Hamptons elite in a curve-hugging, Grecian-inspired maxi dress. Add gold gladiator sandals for an even more goddess-like look. Glam up your hair with gold hair necklace. (Remember when those were all the rage? Pretty sure that was Blake Lively’s fault.) Finally, keep your accessories glittery but classic – a stack of sparkly bangles, a sequined clutch and pearly-gold earrings complete this jaw-dropping look.

Passport to Paris

Serena outfit 4 with gold blazer cobalt capris white tee nude pumps ivory cross body and spike studs

Blazer, Tee, Pants, Pumps, Bag, Cuff, Earrings | Photo: The CW

By season four, Serena abandoned her disheveled schoolgirl wardrobe in favor of a closet full of classic, bold statement pieces. And oh, how we loved every moment of it!

Yes, Serena’s summer in Paris gave us some of her best outfits yet. (Except maybe for this. I can’t get past those pants.) Fashion-wise, Serena had finally come into her own. These days, clean lines and dramatic silhouettes are no problem for her – the girl is a statuesque stunner and she owns every moment of it.

Snag Serena’s bold, gold-embellished look by pairing a sequined blazer with dramatic cobalt pants. Since it’s still Serena we’re dealing with, sport a slouchy white tee under your blazer. Nude pumps and an ivory-tone cross-body bag add polish, while spike earrings and an embellished cuff add high fashion flair.

Your thoughts?

What’s your favorite Serena look? Are you excited for the GG finale? Let’s hear some predictions! Be sure to let me know what you think of the outfits in the comments, I’d love to hear your thoughts!

Looks on Campus: Fran – BYU   September 16th, 2012

Rainy weather often puts a damper (no pun intended) on the fun, breezy styles of late summer. However, it can also make way for some great accessories. Coming down the campus stairs, Fran immediately caught my attention with her bright umbrella. Against the misty backdrop of a light drizzle, Fran’s entire outfit really popped; even in stormy weather, she managed to look perfectly polished.

Fran 101

College student street style at BYU

Name: Fran

Year: Junior

School: Brigham Young University

Major: Communications with an emphasis in Journalism

Hometown: Washington, D.C.

Let’s Talk Fashion

Why do you dress up? “[You never know what might happen during your day, so] you always want to be dressed for every opportunity. I never want to feel underdressed. I want to meet whatever occasion presents itself.”

Where do you like to shop? “Nordstrom Rack, Zara, Mango, Steve Madden for shoes. I find the nicest things on sale on the Urban Outfitters website.”

How would you describe your style? “Urban chic.”

What fashion advice would you give to other students looking to improve their style? “Once in a while, try to find a piece you wouldn’t normally wear. Be a little adventurous when you shop.”

What are your favorite trends right now? “I’m really into ankle boots. They’re fun and they’re comfortable enough to wear all day. I also love metallics, specifically rose gold – it’s very feminine. And I love wide-brimmed hats and cowl neck tops.”

Do you have any favorite fashion designers? “If I had the money, I’d say Chanel. I also love Rebecca Minkoff: I have a laptop case and a cross body bag from her. She’s very modern, but [her pieces are] functional. And Tory Burch: I have this beautiful quilted jacket from her line.”

What do you do for fun? “I’m very studious, so I definitely indulge when I’m not occupied with academics. I love to pamper myself. I will waste my life savings on eyelash extensions! The hair salon is my best friend.”

If you could raid anyone’s closet, who would it be and why? Blair from Gossip Girl! Blair is very polished and feminine. She just looks so fabulous. She wears those outfits, they don’t wear her. It’s the whole package: from her hair, to her makeup, to the way she cares herself– to me, that is style.”

Elements of Fran’s Outfit

1. Rose Gold Bag

Fran02

Fran mentioned that she loves metallic pieces, specifically rose gold, and this purse is proof. It manages to be on-trend while still looking unique and different. Popping against her navy blazer, Fran’s purse really takes her outfit to the next level, while also remaining functional enough for everyday academic needs.

2. Leopard Booties

Fran04

The low heels of Fran’s booties make them comfortable enough for long treks across campus, but they’re also a literal step up from the everyday ballet flats we all see everywhere. The fierce leopard pattern matches Fran’s vivacious personality, and truly goes with everything. (Remember what we always say: Leopard is a neutral!)

3. Poppy Print Umbrella

fran03

Umbrellas are non-negotiable on rainy days, and can be a great way to “wear” color during stormy weather. Fran’s pretty red umbrella stands out, bringing a little bit of sunshine to a gloomy day.

Your Thoughts?

What do you think of Fran’s look? What kind of ankle boots are in your closet? What color is your umbrella? What is your favorite part of Fran’s outfit? Let us know with a comment!

As part of my constant search for fashion inspiration (a.k.a. the best procrastination from summer classwork), I’m always on the lookout for new personal style bloggers to follow – especially those from around my area. I stumbled across Sealed With Style and after scrolling through the first few images, I knew this blog was an immediate favorite of mine and that I have definitely seen the face behind those sassy, cat-eyed sunglasses before. After clicking the about page, I found that the writer was Meaghann, one of the girls I used to dance with in high school!

After years of having seen her in a leotard and tights, I was completely blown away by her natural ability to turn everyday pieces into spectacular outfit combinations. So, not only did we get the chance to catch up, but I got the chance to show you guys one of the most trendy girls I know, who always accessorizes with a vibrant smile.

Name: Meaghann

School: Pennsylvania State University

Year: Junior

Major: Business Marketing and Management

Hometown: Pittsburgh, PA

Favorite hobbies & interests? ”You can catch me almost every day shopping, hanging with friends and family, taking morning runs, or posting and writing for my personal fashion blog titled Sealed With Style. I love all things fashion and starting a fashion blog has really changed my life in the best ways! I am always searching for things that inspire me, especially in the city of Pittsburgh.”

Let’s Talk Fashion

What sparked your interest in fashion? “Ever since I was a little girl, I have always been fascinated with fashion, whether I was dressing my Barbies in gorgeous gowns or designing my own clothes. I wore a uniform in grade school and high school, so fashion was something I wanted to do the minute I came home from school. Throughout the years, fashion has become a part of who I am, and my love for it continues to grow.”

Describe your personal style: “Where to begin? My personal style is a little bit of everything in one! I would say it is mostly classic, but with a little edge. The cool thing about fashion is that you can wear a classic, preppy look one day and the next morning you could wake up wanting to wear an edgy spiked necklace and black booties. It’s like playing dress up every day for me, and that makes it all the more fun!”

Favorite places to shop? “Oh, this list could go on for pages! I love American Eagle Outfitters, H&M, ModCloth, Asos and Forever 21 when I need a cute, inexpensive necklace or pair of colored jeans — college girl on a budget. When shopping for more long-lasting, staple pieces, I look to J.Crew; they have the most gorgeous knits and prints. Macy’s and Anthropologie are also perfect when I am looking for shoes and accessories.”

What would you say is a wardrobe essential, something every girl should have in her closet? “For a college girl, boyfit crops, like I am wearing now, are perfect because they are comfy for sitting in class, (no sweats!) but also on trend and fashionable! Also, jobs and internships are very important at this time, so it is very handy to have a well-fit pencil skirt and blazer in your closet.”

Who or what inspires you to wear what you do? “As a personal style blogger, I look at many other bloggers for inspiration and ideas. However, I am most inspired by the city of Pittsburgh and people on the street. I look for the details that people have on, and try to create my own look from them. My family and friends also inspire me every day. My two adorable sisters are also so stylish so it’s fun to collaborate and create looks that we love.”

What are your favorite trends right now? “I love color blocking! I used to always wear black, white, and grey, and now I can’t get enough color! I also love colored jeans, crazy prints and peplum. Peplum shirts are a girl’s best friend when enhancing curves. And ikat print is super in for summer right now, too; so bohemian. I love it!”

What fashion advice would you give to students trying to develop their own looks? “The best fashion advice I can give to anyone is to be true to yourself and wear what you love! I’ve learned throughout the years that you have to feel comfortable and confident in what you are wearing. Wear what you want, not what others tell you to wear. Start your own trends; and a smile is always fashionable!”

Elements of Meaghann’s Outfit

1. Statement Sunglasses

Statement sunglasses

In the hot summer sun, you’re not going to want a big statement necklace or chunky earrings to weigh you down. Play up your sunglasses with a funky shape or print like Meaghann’s leopard for a practical and fun way to pull focus to your face.

2. Mixed Match Bracelets

Mix and match bracelets

Meaghann’s intentionally uncoordinated stack of bracelets really make the look her own. Things don’t have to be exactly the same matching hue to work.

3. Pops of Pink

Pop of pink with a bold bag

The pink accents added in Meaghann’s nails, bag, bracelets and lip color are both bright and polished, tying her look together instead of breaking it up.

4. Boyfriend Crop Jeans

Boyfriend jeans

It’s not easy to pull off hot pink, heels and sequins without feeling like Barbie, but Meaghann balanced them all out perfectly with her boyfit cropped jeans. The casual cut made her look versatile for class or a day out with friends and can easily be swapped with dressier bottoms to change up the look.

5. Color Block Heels

I know I’ve had my eye on these babies from H&M, too. Their simple structure and on-trend colors are sure to add a few extra inches (five perhaps?) to any outfit’s wow factor.

What do you think?

Do you love Meaghann’s look as much as we do? What color do you like to throw in as an outfit accent? Do you have a personal style blog or are you thinking of starting one? Let us know in a comment!

College Fashion

I met Mackenzie at a dinner held by Lehigh’s Global Village program. For several years, Mackenzie has been involved with the program, which provides cultural and leadership training to over 100 international students each summer. Her style struck me as polished and mature, yet still fun enough to stand out among the rich variety of global fashions.

Major: International Relations with minors in Journalism and Russian

Activities on Campus: Alpha Phi Sorority, Writer for The Brown & White (school paper)

Let’s Talk Fashion

Where do you shop? “All over the place. Anything from H&M and Zara to Michael Kors. As for online shopping, Lulus and Tobi are great websites for inexpensive finds. And if you’re ever in the area, I’ve found lots of nice little boutiques in Doylestown, PA on Main Street.”

What inspires your style? “My mom is one of my biggest fashion influences. She’s always been quite stylish, and I like to think I’ve inherited a bit of that. I shop with her all the time, and she always encourages me to finish my outfits with accessories. We both admire classic looks, but we each take different styling approaches when it comes to the extras.”

Describe your personal style: “Classic meets modern, with a bit of a European twist. Anytime I’m traveling, I like to pick up little trends I observe and incorporate them in my own outfits. I spent the semester abroad in London, but visited Sweden, Barcelona, Rome, and Scotland – each place had its own trends. A big UK trend in general was denim shorts with patterned tights and ankle boots.”

How did you choose today’s outfit? “All the pieces are from different shops – I always tend to mix and match. This season we are seeing a lot of pops and colors and colorblocking, and that’s what inspired my skirt.  I like the striped top because it is part nautical, part Parisian-chic. And blazers are a great way to polish off any look.”

Favorite trends this summer? “Besides colorblocking, I am still a fan of the pastels that were big this spring. They make an outfit look very fresh. I love bright nail polish as well, as you can see with my Tiffany blue polish today! As for accessories, I’ve been seeing a lot of chain link necklaces and bracelets, so that’s on my shopping list.”

What is the biggest fashion faux pas you’ve committed? “Trying to mix too many trends at once. I notice when others do this, but I’m certain I’ve done it myself!”

What is your favorite item in your jewelry box right now? “I was recently in SoHo, NYC, where I picked up a brown leather cuff bracelet with gold dome studs and aqua stones – I’m obsessed.”

If you had a blank check to buy one item today, what would you choose? “A Burberry trench coat. I could picture myself wearing it on the streets of London, but it’s such a classic piece that you could wear it anywhere.”

Any advice for other fashion-minded students? “When you are finding your personal style, it is important to stay true to what you like. You can find a lot of trends in magazines, TV, movies, and even traveling, but it’s important to determine which trends really suit you.”

Elements of Mackenzie’s Outfit

1. Silver Bangles & Tiffany Blue Nail Polish

Silver bangles and Tiffany blue nail polish

Accessory-loving Mackenzie kept her jewelry in the silver family, from her hoop earrings and heart pendant necklace to these bangles. We love a thick armful of bracelets! The silver tone is a great complement to her Tiffany blue manicure, which in turn contrasts nicely with her orange skirt.

2. Black Leather Sandals

Summer footwear staple: Black leather sandals

Designers are constantly conceiving new sandal designs – last summer’s gladiator sandal has evolved into the chic, minimalistic ankle-strap sandal. We’ve certainly come a long way from the flip flop!
