The website PrepNation.com released its pre-season high school football poll and five Florida teams are ranked. One of the bigger surprises? That a Broward County team–St. Thomas Aquinas–is among them.

I say surprise only because in two earlier pre-season polls–USA Today’s Super 25 and MaxPrep’s XCellent 25, the Raiders were nowhere to be found. Neither were any other Broward teams. It just goes to show you how random pre-season national high school football polls can be. (Want another example? USA Today ranks Miami Central as its top team entering the season, while PrepNation puts the Rockets at No. 15, behind St. Thomas, ranked No. 14).

PrepNation’s top ranked team is Bradenton Manatee, which opens the season against Miramar. Also ranked are Miami’s Booker T. Washington (No. 5) and Tampa Plant (No. 11).

USA Today has released its preseason Super 25 rankings and two Broward County high school football teams enter the season considered among the nation’s best.

St. Thomas Aquinas, which won the Class 5A state championship last season, is ranked No. 2, while Miramar, which won the Class 6A title in 2009 comes in at No. 21.

Both teams will face ranked competition throughout the season. The Raiders open the season Aug. 27 vs. Prattville, an Alabama program ranked No. 3 in the poll. Later in the season they’ll take on California De La Salle, ranked No. 6 and Miramar.

Miramar opens the season against Venice on Sept. 2. They’ll also face St. Thomas and Cypress Bay during the regular season.

Regional baseball championships will be decided on Friday, and four Broward County–Flanagan, Archbishop McCarthy, North Broward Prep and Highlands Christian–are still in the hunt for state championships.

But as the season draws closer to a finish, Flanagan and McCarthy are in line to possibly compete for a bigger prize: the mythical national title.

Both are ranked in three major polls, including the Baseball America/National High School Baseball Coaches poll, the ESPN Powerade Fab 50 and the MaxPreps XCellent 25.

What’s interesting though is how wildly the rankings vary.

In Baseball America’s poll, for example, McCarthy is ranked No. 4, while Flanagan comes in at No. 18. In ESPN’s Powerade Fab 50, the Falcons are No. 2, while McCarthy is No. 12 and in MaxPrep’s poll, the Falcons are again, No. 2 while McCarthy is No. 13.

It doesn’t seem likely either team will be a consensus national champion if they continue their success all the way to the state tournament, but with such high rankings right now, either one could find themselves at the top of at least one poll by season’s end.

Is there one poll in particular baseball fans find more meaningful? Which one is it?
