This past weekend, the Florida Athletic Coaches Association held its annual All-Star classics for both volleyball and cross country and South Florida was well-represented.

Several of the area’s top runners were invited to participate, including St. Thomas Aquinas’ Alex Payne and Giselle Suarez, who were both named to the All-Star South lineup.

The All-Star boys cross country team featured North Broward Prep’s Nicholas Palermo, Flanagan’s Edward Romero and Spanish River’s Nick French.

Archbishop McCarthy middle blocker Tashalyn Begon was selected to the volleyball all-star team.

The NCAA Tournament kicked off this week and already, several former Broward County standouts have made their mark.

Flanagan alum Khyle Butler had quality playing time in Butler’s 60-58 win over Old Dominion and Pine Crest alum Brandon Knight hit the winner in Kentucky’s 59-57 victory over Pine Crest.

But Marshall and Knight aren’t the only Broward County players to watch throughout both the men and women’s tournaments. During this year’s NCAA tournaments, Broward will have nine former players competing in the men’s bracket and seven former players competing in the women’s bracket.

Throughout the tournament, we’ll be updating readers on how all those players are doing through a new feature we’ve launched today.

To click and see how Broward’s men’s players are doing, CLICK HERE to see our daily updates. Later this weekend, we’ll be launching a similar page for the women’s players.

When Auburn and Oregon meet for the BCS National Title on Monday, expect some former standouts from Broward County to take part.

Auburn has always done a great job of recruiting South Florida (Anyone remember their years-long Dillard pipeline?) and this year’s team is no different. The Tigers’ roster features five players from across Broward County including defensive lineman Mike Blanc (Deerfield Beach), linebacker Josh Bynes (Boyd Anderson), kicker Wes Byrum (St. Thomas Aquinas), defensive end Antoine Carter (Dillard) and wide receiver Philip Pierre-Louis (St. Thomas).

With that many players from one area on the team, it’s entirely possible a Broward player could have a major impact in the game’s final outcome. In fact, earlier this week, Sports Illustrated ran a story discussing the potential for this year’s national championship game to be decided by special teams.

And Byrum told the magazine that while he hopes the Tigers take care of business well before a game-winning field goal is needed, he’s more than ready for the challenge.

Here’s a look at the story…
