The 10 Most Useful Items in a College Apartment January 27th, 2013
Moving into an apartment is an exciting, yet sometimes stressful, step in one’s college career. With all the new responsibilities you will be taking on, the last thing you want to worry about is how to pack for this new move. And while plenty of sites have useful checklists, there are many items that you won’t realize you’ve forgotten until you are already missing them!
That’s why today, I’m here to share my experience and let you in on the 10 most useful items in a college apartment.
1. Tool Kit and Tape Measure
Assembling furniture and fixing minor maintenance issues can be a cinch if you are prepared for them — no more waiting for the maintenance staff! And the tape measure will come in handy when trying to arrange furniture. It is much easier to measure the space ahead of time, rather than finding out an area is too small after you’ve dragged something across the entire apartment!
2. First Aid Kit
This is one of those things that you’ll hardly miss until you need it – then you’ll be in agony over the fact you forgot! Buy a pre-packaged kit, or assemble your own. Toss in a box of Band-Aids, a tube of Neosporin, some gauze, a digital thermometer, and some go-to meds (Ibuprofen, cold medicine, Benadryl, and Tums), and you’ll be all set!
3. George Foreman Grill
You can cook anything on a George Foreman, from burgers to fish to panini sandwiches. It heats up extremely fast, so you can have breakfast, lunch or dinner ready in no time. And if you buy the style with removable grill plates, you can just pop them in the dishwasher to make cleaning up a breeze!
4. Toaster Oven
A toaster oven is another kitchen “must-have.” It warms up quickly and is much more convenient to use than the full oven. It’s perfect for reheating pizza or anything else that would otherwise get soggy in the microwave. Look for a version that doubles as a regular toaster so you can save counter space and money!
5. Earplugs and an Eyemask
As much as you may love your roommates, your feelings could change at 1AM when you are snuggled in bed and their night has just begun. Even if you live alone, apartment building walls tend to be on the thin side. If you don’t want to see and hear everything that your roommates or neighbors say and do, grab some ear plugs and an eye mask and enjoy a good night’s sleep.
6. Power Strips (and Extension Cords!)
There are never enough outlets in an apartment building, and those that exist are sometimes in hard-to-reach spots. Stock up on a few extra power strips (and maybe an extension cord or two) and you’ll never have to worry about getting everything connected.
7. Extra Lighting and Flashlights

Another thing I’ve learned is that many apartment buildings tend not to have the best lighting. A floor lamp is the best choice to brighten a large space, like the living room. And many stores sell “clip-on” lamps, which are a great option for the bedroom – especially if you don’t have a nightstand where you can place a table lamp. Keep a couple flashlights around as well. They will come in handy if you ever lose power.
8. Wireless Router
Unless you are one of the lucky few blessed with Wi-Fi throughout your entire apartment building, you will be responsible for connecting your unit to the web. A wireless router will allow you to avoid the mess of Ethernet cables. Create your own Wi-Fi by connecting one internet cable to the router, and never worry about staying connected to the cable itself when you need the internet.
9. Extra Storage

This may seem like a no-brainer, but college students typically overestimate the amount of space that will be available in their apartment. When it comes down to it, you should be prepared to utilize every nook and cranny. Plastic file boxes and under-the-bed storage containers are just a couple great options to make the most of your space.
10. Command Hooks

Personally, I have spent a small fortune on Command hooks over the past year. With such a variety to choose from, Command has a perfect way to hang everything from posters to bulletin boards. The hooks can also be used to provide extra hanging space for purses, sweatshirts or anything else you have laying around! Best of all, they can be easily removed from any surface, so don’t worry about dealing with an angry landlord!

Useful Degrees Series: B.S. in Pharmacology and Toxicology from The University of the Sciences July 19th, 2012
Some degrees can do a great deal to help ensure that graduates are able to find work once they graduate. The University of the Sciences is home to the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy, which awards very useful degrees including a B.S. in Pharmacology and Toxicology, and various degrees in the Pharmaceutical Sciences. All of these fields will offer students a variety of employment opportunities.
Part of the reason that pharmacists are in such high demand has to do with dramatically changing demographics. The staggering wave of Baby Boomers that are scheduled to retire is also syncing up with the obesity epidemic, which brings with it greater incidences of heart disease, stroke, cancer and diabetes. While these facts may be depressing, they also serve to underscore the impressive demand and need for medical industry professionals across the board, including pharmacists.
What does a degree in Pharmacology and Toxicology look like? In addition to a wide range of Pharmacology and Toxicology classes, you will also learn statistics, medical physiology and experimental design. There are a variety of career opportunities for pharmacologists as well. Pharmacologists are the professionals who study drugs and how they impact the human body. The number of drugs that the population as a whole is taking is simply skyrocketing, as prescription medication is being prescribed for a very large array of diverse conditions. This fact coupled with a rapidly aging and increasingly unhealthy population results in a dramatic increase in the need for pharmacologists.
Toxicology is similar in nature in that it explores how chemicals can harm living systems. Knowledge in this field can lead to employment in a surprising number of different industries. You could expect to find work in the food industry, the drug industry, the chemical industry, environmental industry, research as well as government.
If you are interested in this degree, it will likely not come as much of a surprise to learn that you should feel comfortable with the world of chemistry and science or at least believe that you can quickly acclimate your mindset. Both of these degrees are obviously focused on chemistry and science. While these may stand as demanding degrees, they likely have ample built-in job security for the next few decades due to the aging population and the current trajectory of poor health trends. This should mean that those pursuing these degrees could expect ample and varied employment options.
The University of the Sciences is located in Philadelphia’s University City, an area that is very vibrant and active. Students considering this school will be able to live in one of America’s most vibrant and historic locations, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It should also be noted that this location gives students easy access to numerous major metropolitan areas on the East Coast ranging from New York City to Boston and more.

Over the years, the Savannah College of Art and Design has built an excellent reputation as being an art and design college that instructs in an impressive variety of disciplines, providing students with an array of skills and diverse capabilities. One interesting program at this school is interactive design and game development. Founded in 1889, the University of Northern Colorado has approximately 10,000 undergraduate and 2,200 graduate students. With over 100 undergraduate and 100 graduate programs, the array of options for students is impressive. The university is located in Greeley, Colorado, which is home to roughly 90,000 residents. High Point University also offers a range of study-abroad programs. To date, there are study-abroad options in over 20 countries including The Sorbonne in Paris, Oxford Brookes University in England and The Art Institute of Italy in Florence.
The Interior Design Major
The School of Art and Design includes classes in digital art, art history, painting, drawing, and digital art. The Art Department offers degrees in Interior Design as well as a major in Home Furnishings. CIDA or the Council for Interior Design Accreditation accredits the Interior Design Major. Coursework typically includes a focus on the basics of interior design principles, as well as a historical overview, design drawing, and computer-assisted design (CAD) rendering.
The Arts Education Degree
Another arts degree option at High Point University is the Arts Education degree. This degree is specifically for those who wish to become licensed to teach art in K-12. The degree program is very diverse covering everything from art history and art in elementary schools to sculpture, painting and ceramics. In addition to numerous art focused classes, students pursuing the Arts Education degree will also have numerous education classes including Educational Psychology.
High Point University enjoys many other options for those interested in an arts degree, including an active theater department that helps take advantage of the university’s large 500-seat performance hall located at the Charles E. and Pauline Hayworth Fine Arts Center. Thanks to the scores of recent improvements, High Point University looks to be a good choice for those interested in a degree in general. Specifically, it is an intriguing option for those interested in an art degree.
